HOTELS AND ACTIVITIES

Lisbon is a cosmopolitan city with so much to see and do that it is difficult to have enough time to see everything in detail. Below are some of the many things your clients shouldn't miss in the Portuguese capital.

Climb the Castle of St. George and stroll through Alfama

No visit to Lisbon is complete without a visit to the Castle of São Jorge. It is the highest point of the city, in the middle of the most typical of neighborhoods, offering views that stretch across the city as far as the Tagus River.

Take a tram ride

It is one of the best ways to travel through the historic districts. It looks good in any photograph and the sound of the trams running along the tracks is one of the most characteristic of the city. The number 28 is the best known.

Visit the Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém

Lisbon has two unique World Heritage monuments. They are two Manueline Gothic jewels that easily impress anyone.

Visit the National Tile Museum and the Coach Museum

Two unique museums in the world. One tells the history of tile in Portugal, while the other has an unparalleled collection of cars, with excellent examples of the eighteenth century.

Dine in Bairro Alto

Lisbon is famous for its bustling nightlife. After an afternoon of shopping in the elegant Chiado district, there is nothing like ending the day at one of the viewpoints, Santa Catarina or São Pedro de Alcântara, and staying for dinner in Bairro Alto. A must for those who like to go out at night and have fun.

Algarve's climate is mild and with plenty of sunshine throughout the year.

The region boasts endless sandy beaches, bounded by golden cliffs, almost deserted islands, or small bays, sheltered by rocks. The ocean, invites to long swims and the practice of nautical sports, like sailing, surfing and windsurfing.

There are also cities like Silves, which preserves vestiges of the Arab past and Lagos from the time of the Discoveries. More cosmopolitan, Portimão and Albufeira live days and nights full of animation, while Tavira is a showcase of traditional architecture.

Faro, the gateway to the region, deserves a leisurely visit to see its beautiful historic center. Your clients can discover the muslim remains in vila-adentro or visit the cathedral and climb the bell tower to enjoy a view of the city and the estuary

Those looking to relax can walk along the seafront promenade, admire the sunset on the islands of Faro or Culatra or climb to the lighthouse at Cape Santa Maria, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal, and admire the landscape.

Make sure to recommended your clients to spend a day at the beach on Deserta Island to enjoy an untouched natural space.

Hidden among the lush Lousã and Açor mountain ranges are the Schist villages.

In this preserved territory your clients can learn about the traditions of the friendly locals and savor their centuries-old gastronomic delights. This preserved territory also has castles and monuments and museums that show what life was like many years ago.

Nature in this area is at its purest state. Activities include the "Caminhos do xisto" (Schist paths), or bike trails marked according to different levels of difficulty. There are also other alternatives for the more adventurous travelers, such as canoeing, climbing, rappelling, and zip-lining.

There are also twelve historic villages perched in the mountains, preserving stories of conquests and ancient traditions, and dazzling with their landscapes, their heritage and the friendliness of the people who inhabit them.

Your clients can walk through the narrow streets of the villages and spot the blue windows and doors, go paragliding, taste sardine-shaped sweets, admire old ruins and medieval architecture or shop for handicrafts and bring home a tambourine or a rag doll.

Dreaming of vacationing on an island is very close to the idea of paradise and for those who consider this motivation when deciding, the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira are destinations not to be missed.

Madeira & Porto Santo

Since 2015, Madeira has been consecutively considered the best island destination by the World Travel Awards (Worlds Leading Island Destination).

The mild temperature all year round, the natural beauty, the lush vegetation of Madeira and the long golden sandy beaches of Porto Santo are great attractions allowing the practice of many outdoor activities.

Walking through nature following the levadas (system of aqueducts), visiting a thousand-year-old laurel forest that is a World Heritage Site, learning about the cultural heritage related to the Discoveries in the city of Funchal, enjoying the sun and sea on the beaches and natural pools, playing golf or taking part in health and wellness programs are some of the options available for a perfect vacation.

It is also worth mentioning some events that are also opportunities to enjoy the gastronomy and see Madeira in festivities: the Carnival parades, the Flower Festival, the Atlantic Festival, and the end-of-year fireworks display.

Azores

Between the American and European continents, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores archipelago is the ideal destination for those seeking a refuge where nature is still in a pure state and in perfect harmony.

Azores are 9 islands of volcanic origin, with a landscape that impresses at all times. A secular history, with a unique heritage, of which the vineyards of the island of Pico and the city of Angra do Heroísmo, both recognized by UNESCO, are examples.

Discovering natural waterfalls and lakes in ancient volcano craters, bathing in hot water cauldrons, taking a walk along the sea to watch dolphins and whales, walking a network of nature trails or climbing above the clouds to the top of Pico, the highest mountain in Portugal, are some of the unique experiences your clients can live in the Azores.

Recognized for their geodiversity, for the preserved marine life and for having 4 islands that are part of the world network of Biosphere Reserves, the Azores are among the 100 most sustainable destinations in the world and have been considered one of the 10 leading destinations in good sustainability practices.

Wine Pairs With Wonder, Wine Pairs With Portugal

Wine Tourism

Portugal's gastronomy is as rich and varied as its landscape.

The sea is the most outstanding feature of Portuguese cuisine. Dishes vary from simple grilled fish seasoned with olive oil, to the seafood that abounds all along the coast, always fresh and of the best quality.

Some examples include the eels in the Aveiro region in the Center of Portugal or the grilled sardines particularly eaten during the Popular Saints festivities in Lisbon in the month of June. In Algarve, clams, oysters and cockles cooked on a griddle or in a frying pan are delicious, while the islands of Madeira and Azores offer different options such as black scabbard fish fillets, tuna steak and octopus.

In meat dishes, a suggestion for the whole country: the cocido a la portuguesa, a mixture of meats, vegetables and various sausages, cooked in a succulent way. From the north to the south of Portugal, there are excellent Protected Denomination of Origin (DOP) meats, whether beef, pork or kid, and fruits and vegetables from organic producers.

When it comes to cheese, it is enough to mention Serra, creamy, unctuous or dry, goat and sheep cheeses, but all the cheeses from Central Portugal, Alentejo or the Azores are delicious too.

Last but not least are Portuguese sweets. Your clients shouldn't miss the opportunity of tasting the mouth-watering pastéis de Belém (aka. Pastel de nata), a highlight of convent sweet making that is a trademark of Portuguese gastronomy.

Portugal is a country of great wine tradition with an excellent quality of its wines, recognized all over the world.

In the north, we find numerous manor houses. In the region of the Green Wines, your clients should taste the wine and buy a bottle at Solar do Alvarinho, in Melgaço.

The Douro Valley, characterized by its hillside vineyards, is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. A good way to discover the region is on board a cruise, to visit the wine villages that produce the excellent Douro and Port wines.

Alentejo is home to many of the main national wine producers. In Évora, a World Heritage city,
your clients can participate in the grape harvest and observe the different stages of winemaking. The 2015 European City of Wine, Reguengos de Monsaraz, proposes different initiatives, such as astronomical observations with wine tasting, grape picking, and enogastronomic dinners.

Finally it is worth mentioning Madeira wine, with the vines, arranged in terraces supported by stone walls, form stairways that in some points of the island join the sea and the mountains, giving rise to dazzling landscapes.
