DAVID THOMPSON COUNTRY, ALBERTA’S UNDERAPPRECIATED MOUNTAIN GEM

The eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies are wild and ruggedly beautiful – an ideal place to bear the name of David Thompson, one of the most fearless explorers and land geographers that ever lived. The David Thompson Highway, also known as Highway 11, follows the fur-trading trails of the famed explorer through this region that lies east of Banff and Jasper National Parks.

David Thompson Country is a place filled with majestic mountain peaks, pristine wilderness, friendly people, mighty rivers and sparkling lakes — including Abraham Lake, Alberta’s largest man-made reservoir.

CHASING WATERFALLS:  The trailheads for Crescent Falls, Whitegoat Falls and Siffleur Falls lie within a 50 km (31 mi) stretch along the David Thompson Highway. Start with stunning two-tiered Crescent Falls. It’s a short walk from the lower parking lot to the observation platforms that overlook the falls.

HELI ADVENTURE:  A full day of hiking and a little bushwhacking through rugged terrain will bring you to Waterfall Creek, a beautiful spot in David Thompson Country. Or you can get there by helicopter on a heli-hiking adventure with Rockies Heli Canada. My family and I chose the second option and we loved it. The enormous mountain peaks felt close enough to touch as we soared over them on our way to the trail near the falls.

VIA FERRATA CLIMBING: If you like the idea of climbing a mountain, but you don’t have skills or equipment, a guided via ferrata climbing tour could be for you. Girth Hitch Guiding takes guests on two established via ferrata routes in David Thompson Country. It’s a safe way to experience the thrill of scaling a gigantic cliff face in the Canadian Rockies.

HORSEBACK RIDING: Whether you want to experience an hour-long trail ride or an epic multi-day backcountry horseback adventure, McKenzie’s Trails West has got you covered. For more than 50 years, this family-run outfitter has lived, loved and guided in David Thompson Country.

THE LARGEST DARK SKY PRESERVE IN THE WORLD

Canada's largest national park is also home to the world's largest dark sky preserve. Visitors can step outside their tent or the cabin they´re renting at Pine Lake and glimpse the beautiful night sky, with more stars peppering the dark than they have probably ever seen!

Do you want to recommend your clients an even better view? Check out the dark sky viewing platform steps from Wood Buffalo NP's rental cabins. Wood Buffalo National Park was designated a Canadian Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) in 2013. This designation preserves habitat for almost a dozen owl species, bats and other nocturnal animals.
